CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas, Dec. 11, 2018 – Valero’s three refineries in South Texas and its terminal and distribution group pledged more than $1.2 million to the United Way of the Coastal Bend, from their recently completed 2019 giving campaign. Of that amount, more than $830,000 is projected to come directly from Valero employees who voluntarily make yearly pledges and host additional fundraisers to support United Way programs. Valero then matches employee pledges at 50 percent.
“Our employees at Valero give generously every year of both their time and money,” said Dennis Payne, Vice President and General Manager of the Valero Bill Greehey Refineries in Corpus Christi. “We recognize our contributions are helping make a big impact right here in the Coastal Bend and this year was a banner year.”
“We are very fortunate to work for a great company like Valero, and this is our way of giving back,” said Erik Simpson, Vice President and General Manager of Valero Three Rivers Refinery. “I’m very proud of all of the Valero employees who make yearly pledges. We have some employees who give more than 2 percent of their annual salary to the United Way, which is wonderful.”
Contributions from regular payroll deductions and the company match will be paid periodically throughout the coming year, with the projected total amount based on pledges by current, active employees, plus money from additional fundraisers already completed.
The United Way of the Coastal Bend partners with 46 local agencies that benefit from community pledges, such as those from Valero employees. All agencies that receive United Way support are reviewed on an annual basis.
"The gifts United Way of the Coastal Bend receives from Valero are the cornerstone of our work in South Texas," said Catrina Wilson, President and CEO of United Way of the Coastal Bend. "Valero and its employees shy from the spotlight, but it's important for our community to know of their incredible generosity. Because of their gifts, children are ready to enter school, families transition out of poverty, victims of violence find safety, those battling addiction disorders receive treatment and people are provided quality healthcare. Last year their gifts helped transform more than 130,000 lives, and we are so very grateful."
Companywide, Valero and its employees pledged $14.66 million to United Way organizations for the 2019 campaign, representing an 11 percent increase from the previous year and average per capita pledges of $1,138.
