Volunteer Kingsville: April 18, 2008
Participants from Naval Air Station Kingsville, Uranium Resources, Inc., Navy Federal Credit Union, Texas A&M University Athletics Department, Kleberg County Sheriff’s Office, Nueces County District Attorney’s Office, Kingsville Chamber of Commerce and students from Texas A&M University Kingsville’s EXCEL Program all lent a bit of elbow grease to complete a number of improvements to the Club. One group tackled the repair and repainting of walls in the Club’s media room, while another group worked to assemble new playground equipment. Yet another group put their technology skills to work in debugging and repairing computers in the learning lab and a final group of TAMUK students did a great job of cleaning the gym.
The mission of the Boys & Girls Club is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. By reaching children at an early age and providing positive activities and encouragement, the Club provides a compelling alternative to youth crime, gang membership, drugs, and other negative influences that effect our youth today. The Kingsville Club serves an average of 80 local children per day in its after school and summer programs.

In addition to the improvements at the Boys & Girls Club, United Way partnered with Kingsville Chamber of Commerce to host a ribbon cutting for Family Counseling Services of Kleberg County at their new facilities located at 603 E. Kleberg. Participants enjoyed hot dogs and other refreshments as they browsed the facility and mingled with staff. A number of other United Way Partner Agencies were represented including Girl Scouts of South Texas, South Texas Youth Development, Kleberg County Adult Literacy Council, OATH (Open Arms Thankful Hearts) and the Women’s Shelter of South Texas.
Family Counseling Services operates in Kleberg, Nueces and surrounding counties and exists to strengthen children, individuals and families by providing professional therapy, education and advocacy and other supportive services in response to community needs. Their professional therapists teach life skills such as communication, anger management, problem-solving, relationship enrichment, parenting, anxiety and stress management, recovering from loss and grief and building self-esteem.
For seventy years, United Way of the Coastal Bend has been dedicated to addressing and solving the most pressing issues in our local community by bringing together individuals with a varied background and skill set. The common goal is to achieve long lasting changes that prevent problematic issues, before they occur.
