United Way of the Coastal Bend is hosting a free "Real Talk" workshop to engage the community in positive and meaningful discussion on the issue of homelessness.
The workshop, "Homelessness in Corpus Christi: A snapshot of the issue," observes data collected by the city’s Homelessness and Workforce Housing division and challenges participants' assumptions about the causes of homelessness and who it affects.
"On any given day, over half a million Americans experience homelessness, lacking access to safe, stable, permanent housing. We cannot afford to accept this situation as unsolvable," said Emily Shafer Northrup, Homeless Outreach Coordinator for the City of Corpus Christi. "Through examination of the facts surrounding homelessness in our community, we hope participants will leave informed and empowered to make positive impacts in their own networks."
The event is just one of several free "Real Talk" workshops being offered through United Way of the Coastal Bend's Success By 6 Early Childhood Initiative.
"The goal of Success by 6 is to ensure every child in the Coastal Bend is safe, healthy, and ready to learn," said Sherry Peterson, Success By 6 Director for United Way of the Coastal Bend. "Through our "Real Talk" workshops, we're providing opportunities for the community to engage in "learning conversations" about difficult topics, such as homelessness and addiction, that can impact families and children."
