Donations to local COVID-19 response and recovery fund reach more than $264,000

Donations to United Way of the Coastal Bend’s COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund have reached more than $264,000, thanks in part to a $50,000 contribution from AEP Texas and $145,000 from anonymous donors.

“American Electric Power, parent company of AEP Texas, created the AEP Foundation in 2005 to continue the tradition of corporate philanthropy of AEP and its regional utilities and to support and play an active, positive role in the communities where AEP employees live and work,” Judith E. Talavera, AEP Texas president and chief operating officer, said. “During times like these when our communities are in need of additional help, we are especially proud to be able to help others as they may address additional challenges meeting basic needs, such as food and shelter. We are grateful that the United Way of the Coastal Bend exists as a resource for our community, and can effectively allocate these funds.”

With 100 percent of donations going toward COVID-19 response and recovery efforts, the fund was established by United Way of the Coastal Bend to support local non-profit agencies providing food assistance, rent and utility assistance, mental health services, and more to impacted residents.

Approximately $216,500 of the funds raised thus far have been disbursed, and have gone toward response and recovery efforts being carried out through the following Coastal Bend agencies:
  • Amistad Community Health Center
  • Aransas Pass for Youth
  • Beeville Vineyard
  • Boys & Girls Club of Kingsville
  • Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Bend
  • Catholic Charities of Corpus Christi

  • Live Oak Child Welfare Board
  • Mother Teresa Shelter
  • Salvation Army of Corpus Christi
  • The Council on Alcohol & Drug Abuse
  • The Purple Door

“We are humbled by the support our COVID-19 fund has received from local businesses and donors,” said Libby Averyt, President & CEO of United Way of the Coastal Bend. “As this crisis evolves, so do the needs of our community. It’s important that we continue to support one another and do what we can, where we can, to help those being impacted.”
