Free event promotes early childhood literacy, offers activities and giveaways for young children

To promote early childhood literacy, the Success By 6 Early Childhood Coalition is hosting a Week of the Young Child Into the Wild event.

The Week of the Young Child® is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The annual event focuses public attention on the needs of young children and their families and recognizes the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

“The pandemic forced families to adapt their social activities, which negatively affected early learning opportunities and development in young children,” said Sherry Peterson, Success By 6 Director at United Way of the Coastal Bend. “As we begin to resume more ‘normal’ activities, we hope this event will provide an enriched hands-on learning experience for children and help mitigate those effects.”

The Into the Wild event will take place on Saturday, Apr. 9, 2022 from noon to 3 p.m. at La Retama Library (806 Comanche Street in Corpus Christi). The event is free and open to the community.

Event highlights include children’s performances, storytelling, arts and crafts, giveaways and a Giraffes in My Closet book signing by local author Debra Young Hatch. Attendees can also sign up their child(ren) to participate in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Challenge.

Success By 6 is a community coalition established by United Way of the Coastal Bend. The initiative provides support for child-focused and family-driven services working to meet the health and development needs of children in Nueces County.
