Event addresses early childhood literacy, offers free books and activities

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – To promote early childhood literacy, the Success By 6 Early Childhood Coalition is hosting a Week of the Young Child Spring into Reading drive-thru event.

The Week of the Young Child® is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). This year marks the 50th celebration of Week of the Young Child, which focuses public attention on the needs of young children and their families and recognizes the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

“Our 2014 EDI study found that many Corpus Christi children are not prepared to enter Kindergarten,” said Sherry Peterson, Success By 6 Director at United Way of the Coastal Bend. “This was particularly true for children living in at-risk neighborhoods, where roughly 45 percent were not ready for kindergarten in one or more developmental domains.”

The Spring into Reading event will take place on Saturday, Apr. 17, 2021 from 10 a.m. to noon at Del Mar College’s White Library (101 Baldwin Blvd. in Corpus Christi).

Those attending will receive free children's books, crafts & activities, see local mascots, and learn about community resources. Attendees can also sign up their child(ren) to participate in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Challenge.

Success By 6 is a community coalition established by United Way of the Coastal Bend. The initiative provides support for child-focused and family-driven services working to meet the health and development needs of children in Nueces County.
